Having an elliptical trainer as a cardio workout companion, pays handsome health dividends. Improved cardiovascular function, overall conditioning, and healthy weight loss due to a revved up metabolism, are all part and parcel of the benefits of an elliptical trainer package.

Although these machines were primarily developed as a low-impact exercise solution, elliptical trainers have become superb general fitness tools. They offer continuous motion, without the commotion, so to speak!

With the help of the firm footing provided by the elliptical trainer’s footpads or footplates, the user ‘walks’ with a natural, smooth, flowing movement. The result is bone-strengthening, weight-bearing, fat-burning, aerobic exercise, without the jarring that is a major cause of joint injuries.

You will have a riot on your hands if only your hips, glutes, and legs are called to ‘gym’ service. Maintain bodily harmony and peace, by looking at elliptical trainers that sport crosstraining handlebars. This will get your upper body into the game, placating complaining hips and thighs.

By following this strategy, you maximize the calorie-burning benefit you derive from your time on the elliptical trainer. At the same time, you will be strengthening your arms, back, chest, and shoulders.

Elliptical Trainer – A Basic Checklist

Adjustable Resistance: As your body adapts to the cardio workout, and your aerobic capacity increases, you will need an adjustable resistance feature to maintain the effectiveness off the elliptical trainer program. Look for a machine that offers this feature at the push of a button. You don’t want to lose your momentum, while changing gear.

Backing Up Is Beneficial: An elliptical trainer should offer both forward and reverse motion. This prevents repetitive strain injuries, by cajoling different muscles into action. It also adds variety to your exercise routine, maintaining interest.

Concise Consoles: Make sure that you will be able to understand the workings of the elliptical trainer’s console. Functionality and clear programming are vital. Some machines conveniently accommodate more than one user.

Do-It-Yourself: Most elliptical trainers feature a wide variety of pre-set programs – more than enough to test your limits for some time. However, you may want the option to customize programs to allow for your particular needs. Check that this will be possible.

Even Fluency: When testing an elliptical trainer, a clear sign of the quality of the machine, is the fluency of the motion, and a low noise level. Any sign of instability, is a sign to focus on a different model.

Footprint Fit: If space is a problem, an elliptical trainer may be an ideal option, as it usually is quite a compact piece of fitness equipment. Many models come with wheels for no-fuss mobility.

Heart Rate Monitor: Most elliptical trainers feature hand grip sensors on the handlebars. In any cardiovascular exercise program, it is vital to monitor your heart rate, in order to make adjustments to the workout intensity. A heart monitor strap may also be available.

Incline Incentive: A quality elliptical trainer will have as one of its features, an 0% to 10% adjustable incline, allowing you to up the ante as your muscle power increase. For maximum cardiovascular and strength-building benefits, it is important to retain an element of challenge in your routine.

Jolts And Jars: When testing an elliptical trainer, look for a completely smooth movement, without any jolts or bouncyness in the footpads.

Knee-Demands: An elliptical trainer often is a suitable option to consider, if you are experiencing any knee problems. The natural movement promotes proper alignment of ankle, knee, and hip. However, it is always safe to check with a health practitioner, if you have any medical concerns.

Length Of Stride: Test the elliptical trainer to make sure that it is completely comfortable. Don’t let the machine cramp your style!

All the prominent manufacturers have designed state-of-the-art, feature-rich crosstrainers. The only way to make sure that you find the perfect partner for your cardio workout, is to thoroughly test a wide range of elliptical trainers.

Copyright 2006 John Perry

I was reading an article the other day that referred to honesty as the one true secret to happiness.

Is there one true secret to anything?

I was asking myself this question while preparing an outline for one of my live events. I have often spoken on this topic during one segment of my seminars. I decided to take a step back and really ponder the one true success principle with exercise and fitness.

I have visions of Billy Crystal and “Curly” riding though the open prairie in the movie City Slickers. This is when “Curly” tells Billy Crystal the one secret to life.

I am reminded of the great Earl Nightingale, who spoke of the secret to success – “You become what you think about.”

Everyday, I see thousand of books on the one and only way or one secret to everything from great sex to making a million dollars.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a single secret to happiness in life, to money problems, to relationships and to health and fitness?

Does it exist?… I think so. I can at least speak for the health and fitness secret.

I am going to give you the answer, at least in my eyes, by attacking it from both ends.

For a lot of people, being healthy and fit is a common goal and yet a puzzling mystery, in terms of how to accomplish it. There are varying opinions, thousand of books, websites, etc.; how does one decide which are the best?

Believe it or not, I do not think there is a single exercise or single routine that is the only way to get fit or the only way to get healthy. I do think there are certain principles that apply to a perfect routine. I also think there is a secret principle, and if followed many of the other benefits and by-products of fitness tend to fall in line.

It is simply this: Move as the body is designed to move.

At first glance you may think that a 3-year-old could figure that out. Actually, most 3-year-olds do a better job of it than most adults. Moving as we are designed happens naturally for them. Somewhere between this ripe age and adulthood we develop some bad habits.

Hobbies, sports, exercise routines, work-related tasks; all lead to poor postures, inflexibility, weak muscles, joint pain, body compensations; which all lead to poor movement patterns. And we wonder why we are a country that is overweight with orthopedic and other health-related issues.

A lot of this stems from how we learn to exercise; beginning with an improper warm-up/flexibility routine, to how we exercise and with the type of equipment we use. This usually only exacerbates the already poor mechanical problems that exist from our daily work and home habits.

But, hey, it is not our fault; we are only doing what we have learned. It is not our fault we messed up a perfectly functioning movement system. Right?

Then, we combat the problem with pain relieving drugs, creams, and “corrective” exercise routines and equipment. This is not our fault! We are only doing what we are told!

How do you know if your routine allows you to move correctly and like you are designed?

Ask yourself these questions first: Am I at my ideal weight? Do I look and feel the way I want to look and feel. Do I have joint pain and /or muscle pain? Do I take medicine or apply creams on a regular basis for orthopedic-related problems? Do any of the exercises in my routine make me uncomfortable or cause discomfort when performing them? Are any of the exercises I perform far from resembling how I move or work on a daily basis?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then you probably need to work on your movement mechanics; both with exercise and your daily habits.

Begin by exercising on your feet and in multiple planes of motion (3, to be exact). Next, allow the muscles to go through a range of motion that is sufficient for proper lengthening while under tension. Then, the muscles need to unload to release that built- up energy. All this will help to produce more normal mechanics.

The planes of motion are sagittal, frontal, and transverse, (straight ahead, side to side and rotational). Every movement has parts of all 3 involved at all times; one plane may just be more dominant, depending on the particular movement.

Coupled with all 3 planes, movement must be performed through the available range of motion to allow for proper loading and unloading of the muscles and joints. Then you will have a winning recipe for proper movement. Throw in balance, speed and resistance changes and you have a great fitness formula.

The body will respond much better because it understands what you are trying to do. The body is working with muscle synergies (groups of muscles working together) rather than isolated individual muscles (as with certain machines and routines). This is how the brain recognizes normal movement; in terms of synergies. This is what we abandon over time and why we develop the movement problems we do.

You are actually giving the brain the information it needs to allow you to be successful. It is a two-way street. If you give the brain good information, because you are moving properly (and in a way that makes sense to the brain), it will, in turn send back helpful information to make you move better. Literally scratching each other’s back.

Why would you sabotage you own system by confusing your own brain?

Which brings me to the other end of the “one secret” answer.

Your brain does not care what you feed it. It will react and respond based on the information it receives.

If fed positive thoughts, new learning experiences and proper movement patters it will respond, in turn, with ways to make you successful; in terms of positive thinking, more knowledge and better fitness levels.

If you feed your brain garbage, such as negative thoughts, passive experiences and improper movement choices, it will give you the same in return. It is like a garden. Whatever you plant… that is what you shall receive.

I guess Earl Nightingale had it right. You do become what you think about.

I would like to add a little to that.

You become what you feed your brain. Feed it proper movement patterns, positive thoughts and new learning experiences. You will become what you focus on… what you give your brain to focus on.

And that my friend… is the secret.

“Life’s strict rule is this: You get more of what you focus on. Ignoring this, we abandon our healthiest, concentrative energies and court emotional upheaval.” Marsha Sinetar

You’ve probably been hearing about “core” exercises and Pilates for quite a while and are probably doing it once to thrice a week, you’ve probably used different DVD’s, different styles techniques and different equipment just to get that great body that everybody is drooling about. Hearing of all this, you’ve probably heard of the Ever present Pilates Ring, the non bulky, and cheaper alternative to all of those bulky machines.

The Pilates ring of course, as its name says, is used in the practice of Pilates, specifically for Winsor Pilates. Winsor Pilates makes use of low intensity workouts that work on the “core” of the body. By core it means the muscles in the abdomen, back and pelvis. As these are low intensity, these can be done even by those who are of weak health status. But just because it is low intensity doesn’t mean it’ll take a long time for results, or won’t have results, in fact Winsor Pilates promise results in a month, when it is used three days a week. Wisnor Pilates is distributed on DVDs.

A Pilates ring however, aside from being used to tone the buttocks and the abdominal and pelvic muscles can also be used to specifically target muscles in the leg, pecs, lats, triceps and biceps. It is an all around exercise accessory that everyone should have. To change position, you can reposition the ring in either your arms or your legs, whatever location it is that you want to tone and improve, and basically and squeezing it. But there is more to a Pilates ring than merely squeezing; anything done wrongly can cause injury, especially when exercising, so before you start, try to consult a certified Pilates instructor.

Pilates rings also have different brand names, and depending on the manufacturer, different resistances. Some manufacturers offer a line of different resistances; some offer just one line with one resistance. It is suggested that you get those that have varied resistances so that you’re your body has been used and toned at a certain level; you can further increase your workout by increasing the resistance of the Pilates ring. Some rings have a stronger resistance for a harder workout; some have lighter resistance for a lighter workout. Just remember, make sure that you can take the resistance before rushing into it. Anything, no matter how foolproof can be dangerous if used incorrectly, in short, you might get injured if you use too much resistance. Again, try to consult a certified Pilates instructor before changing resistances.

Pilates rings, boast of foam padded grips for the comfort of the user, these are the parts that make actual contact with the part of the body, making the exercise more comfortable than if done without one. Pilates rings are made of lightweight material, and may be brought with you anywhere, to the gym or at home or during travel.

The Pilates ring is only one of the few accessories, or if you must, equipment that Winsor Pilates incorporates into its program for a better workout. However, you don’t really need a Pilates program to be able to use a Pilates ring. Although the ring was made especially for this program, the Pilates ring itself can be incorporated into any other type of exercise program that you currently have, providing that you consult with your instructor.

Everyone wants to eat a healthier diet, but it can sometimes be difficult to know if your diet is healthy enough.

There are a number of factors that go into creating a healthy diet, and it is important to evaluate the current state of your diet before embarking on a plan for healthier eating.

There are several questions you should ask yourself when evaluating the healthiness (or lack thereof) of your current eating plan!

Do I eat a wide variety of foods?

Variety is one of the most important hallmarks of a healthy diet, since no one food contains all the nutrients needed by the human body. It is important to eat foods from all the major food groups, including grains and breads, fruits and vegetables, milk and dairy products, meats, beans and nuts.

If you find yourself avoiding some food groups, such as vegetables for instance, it may be time to look for a healthier diet.

Do I recognize the importance of cereals, breads and other grain products?

Eating a wide variety of grain based products is important to a healthy diet. Grains and cereals contain a large number of important nutrients, including high levels of dietary fiber.

It is important to choose whole grain products as often as possible, since whole grain products like wheat bread contain more nutrients than more refined white bread and similar products. When eating cereal, it is a good idea to choose whole grain varieties, or those that are enriched with vitamins and minerals.

Do I eat lots of fruits and vegetables?

Many people do not eat sufficient servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Most experts recommend eating between 5 and 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, roughly equivalent to 2 cups of fruit and 2 cups of vegetables.

When shopping for vegetables and fruits, it is important to choose a good variety of dark green, dark red, orange and yellow varieties. That is because different colored fruits and vegetables contain a variety of different nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin A and beta carotene.

Do I eat a good breakfast every morning?

Breakfast, or the absence of it, is often a good indicator of the state of your diet. If you rush out of the house every morning and grab a donut at the local convenience store, chances are your diet can use some work. A healthy breakfast provides a foundation for the rest of the day, helps you avoid cravings and provides much needed nutrition.

Do I choose low fat foods over higher fat alternatives?

This is also an important question to ask yourself. Low fat alternatives are available for a variety of products, including milk, cheese, meats and more.

One part of following a healthy, low fat diet is avoiding prepared foods whenever possible, since prepared foods tend to have higher amounts of fat and sodium than fresh foods.

It is also important to control the amount of fat that is added at the table. Adding things like butter, sour cream and heavy sauces is a sure way to ruin an otherwise healthy meal. Even healthy foods like salads can be sabotaged by the addition of high fat salad dressings. Try using lower fat alternatives like flavored vinegars instead.

Do I drink plenty of water?

Drinking plenty of fresh, pure water is important to maintaining a healthy body and a healthy lifestyle. Water is important to maintaining optimal levels of health. If you think you need more water, try substituting water for less healthy beverages like soda and coffee.

Am I able to maintain my optimal body weight?

Gaining weight without trying to is often a sign of a poor diet. Following a healthy diet, and getting plenty of regular exercise, is the only way to lose weight and keep it off.

Do I limit the amount of salt, sugar, alcohol and caffeine in my diet?

While all of these elements are fine in moderation, excessive amounts of any of these four can indicate a serious problem with your diet. It is important to limit the amount of unhealthy elements in any diet.

Do you ever feel like you are working out so hard and nothing seems to happen. You can’t seem to lose that last few pounds, increase that bench press or tighten up those triceps. Why?

Why do doctors only recommend that you take antibiotics for a short period of time? The only are affective for a short while because the body builds up an immune system to them. One of the biggest mistakes we have all made in our quest for good health is to get in our comfort zone and do the same old workout routine and eating plan. Guess what? Your body adapts to these daily routines and gets bored and stale.

Exercise and losing weight is a constant pushing of your bodies mental and physical potentials. Arnold Swartzneggar once said, “Life is about the last three reps of an exercise.” In order to get anything out of it, you have to push yourself.

This is hard to explain, but after about ten weeks on the same workout plan and after eating the same foods at each meal, the body adapts and the heart rates go down and the muscles are not overloaded anymore. What is the answer then?

If you learn no other key to weight loss or exercising learn this: you have to constantly shock your body into progressing. If you can keep you body from getting use to things you will have a better chance of losing weight and keeping longevity into your workout.

However, this will take some thinking ahead on your part. If you start getting edgy, poor sleeping patterns, soreness or any other unusual aches this is probably what is happening. Try to avoid the number one mistake people make in allowing your body to figure out what your game plan is. Do this and you will consistently see progress.

Exercise bike is presently one of the most popular home cardio exercise equipments. It is the best equipment to improve one’s health. Actually it is designed for some special purposes. Exercise bikes are categorized as upright exercise bikes and recumbent exercise bikes. Both are good but people generally feel comfortable with recumbent because they’ve bucket seats.

In the ancient India, philosophy has been traditionally divided into two main groups. These groups are called as the orthodox group and heretic group. The orthodox group believes in the authority of Vedas in all the philosophical matters. These orthodox systems are six in all. One of the most popular systems of philosophy is yoga.

It shares the following common beliefs with the other orthodox systems:

* Belief in the permanent soul, which forms the basis of life.

* Soul is supposed to discard one body at the time of death and enter a new one at the time of new birth.

* A strong belief in the karma, which states that the events happening in a person’s life are a direct results of the events in his previous life or lives (if the person has been born many times).

* A belief that the life of an individual is primarily of misery and sorrow.

* A belief in the state of complete freedom from misery and sorrow called mukti or moksha.

Yoga adopts the dualistic doctrine of explaining the universe of objects and living beings. It assumes that the universe was originally created by the uniting or samyoga of two eternal realities called purusha and prakriti. Purusha forms the basis of all the spiritual objects while prakriti deals with the material objects. Prakriti and everything that comes from it has three gunas viz.: sattva, rajo and tamas in various proportions and combinations.

Sattvaguna deals with all that is pure and holy while rajasguna deals with all the rich and royal qualities and tamasguna deals with all the baser qualities like greed, lust, anger, fear etc. The samyoga of the purusha and the prakriti is virtual. It does not exist but only the ignorant mind thinks it is real. This is due to the illusion called avidya and binds the purusha and causes him to transmigrate from one body to another in the various births. Once the avidya is dispelled completely, one can break free from the cycle of bith and death and can achieve moksha. This is easily achieved by following the eightfold path given by Patanjali in his Yogasutras.

Essential fatty acids are the number one recommendation for anyone who has, or wants to prevent common chronic diseases today, such diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. And they are very helpful in improving immune system function to increase energy and reverse some of the damage seen in diseases such as lupus, fibromyalgia, and MS. What types of fat are in your diet?

If you have dry skin, stiffness, concentration problems, or hormonal imbalances you may be lacking in a type of fat that is essential to health. Essential fatty acids are those fats that the body needs; yet cannot synthesize itself. Many types of fat are unhealthy fats, yet some are beneficial and necessary. In fact, cutting all fat from the diet is actually harmful to health.

Essential fatty acids are needed to metabolize other types of fats that are not good for us. Saturated fat is a harmful fat that is found in many types of red meat and dairy foods. Yet, the worse types of fats are the partially hydrogenated oils found in snack foods. These types of fats, found in most processed foods, are converted to trans-fatty acids when heated, or oxidized. So when you make boxed cakes or brownies you create trans fats when you bake these partially hydrogenated oils that are included in the mix so that the box can sit on your shelf indefinitely. These are the types of fat that increase cholesterol in the arteries.

The good fats, called essential fatty acids, are important in many metabolic processes, including energy production. Since the body cannot produce them, they must be consumed in the diet to optimize health. The essential fatty acids are the omega-3 (linoleic) and omega-6 (linolenic) polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Every cell in the body is like a tiny factory, taking in raw materials from the surrounding fluid and sending out various chemicals. Everything going into or coming out of the cell has to pass through the cell’s membrane. The membrane depends on essential fatty acids to remain fluid and flexible. Without them, the membrane becomes stiff and unable to do its job.

Essential fatty acids are also important to bring vital oxygen to muscle cells and they enable the cells to more easily absorb nutrients needed for recuperation. In one study of 63 patients with fibromyalgia, essential fatty acid supplementation resulted in a 74% reduction in pain in patients after 1 month, and 85% after 3 months.

This is a list of the benefits realized by regular use of essential fatty acids: Improved cholesterol levels Lower blood pressure Improved memory Increased circulation Reduced joint stiffness Reduced dryness of the skin Improved immune system function Less inflammation Balanced hormones Depression reduced.

As you can see, fatty acids are essential for metabolism and health. Flax oil is the richest vegetarian source of omega-3 fats. It is commonly used in salads in place of other salad dressings. Flax oil shouldn’t be used for cooking, as high heat damages the fatty acids. Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids are fish oils from salmon, tuna, cod, and mackerel.

Omega-6 fatty acids are found in many vegetable oils such as borage, flaxseed, walnut, soy, corn, sunflower, and are especially abundant in evening primrose oil. These omega-6 acids help to soften dry skin and relax tense muscles.

Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids need to be supplemented in the diet. The ideal ratio of these fats is 2 parts omega-3 to 1 part omega-6 to reduce inflammation and pain, and to improve energy metabolism. Increasing the amount of fish oils and flax oil will help especially get the omega-3 fatty acids into the metabolism. 2000 mg. of flax oil is usually equivalent to 2 capsules or 1 tablespoon, and is the recommended minimum per day.

The omega-3 and omega-6 need catalysts to be absorbed in the body. These catalysts are vitamins B3 (niacin) and B6, vitamin C, and the minerals magnesium and zinc. When there is a deficiency of these nutrients then the essential fatty acids will not be absorbed well. Also when too many saturated or trans fats are part of the normal diet then supplementation of essential fatty acids is less effective.

A combination of essential fatty acids, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants, are all needed in your daily diet, or on whole food supplement form, to make the metabolic changes that reverse many chronic disease symptoms. Supplementing with sufficient amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in balance will help you absorb the other nutrients you take in from your foods, and can make a great improvement in your overall health and vitality.

When choosing an elliptical trainer, you’ll want to consider a variety of things to determine which elliptical machine will best suit your needs. You should pay attention to the quality and durability, features, brand reputation (important when buying online), and weight restrictions. Oh yeah, you will need to decide how much you’re willing to spend also.

The great thing about elliptical trainers is that they are a wonderful alternative to the treadmill or stair stepper machine if you have joint problems. There is much less impact (virtually none) to your legs and knees. They also do not take up a lot of space.

First, you may want to visit your local sporting goods outlets/stores to try out different brands of ellipticals, because comfort on an elliptical trainer is difficult to gauge just by browsing online. Don’t be intimidated or pressured by the sales people – you are there to decide which machine is best for you. After all, you’re the one paying for it, right?

Once you have decided which machines feel best to you, you’ll want to check out the features and pricing. What features are you willing to sacrifice for the sake of your budget? One thing you do not want to sacrifice, and I must stress this, is comfort. Because if you’re not comfortable on the machine, then you won’t use it, now will you?

So this means that you may decide on a more expensive, quality constructed machine with less features than a cheaper model because it feels more comfortable to you.

Pay attention to the construction and weight requirements of the elliptical machine. If you are going to be using the trainer a lot, you will want a sturdier model that can withstand heavier use. If it is just going to be used occassionally in addition to other equipment, you can probably get away with a cheaper model.

Also please, please pay attention to the weight requirements – you don’t want to just waste your money (in an effort to save) on a trainer that is going to break or wear out and not be of any use to you because you did not bother to pay attention to weight requirements. Worse yet, you could actually injure yourself by ignoring these details. It’s best to invest a little more.

To help you get more out of your workouts, I would definitely suggest that you try to purchase an elliptical trainer with adjustable incline (simulates different walking and running positions) and upper body attachments or poles. You should also choose a reputable brand that is easy to repair if repairs are ever needed. However, only you can decide which machine is best for your needs.
