Blind Skiers See the Light

Monday, January 18th, 2010

About three hours west of Denver lies Snow Mountain Ranch, one of the top cross-country ski centers in the United States. Known as the “YMCA of the Rockies”, it boasts a large ski chalet and over 90 kilometers of packed and groomed trails.

From January 30 to February 6, 2005, the center will host the 30th annual Ski for Light International event, a week that brings blind and mobility-impaired adults together with sighted ski instructors for cross-country skiing and fun social activities. Participants come from the United States, Norway, and several other countries to either learn skiing for the first time, or improve on previously developed skills.

The first Ski for Light was held in Norway in 1964, and was so successful that a nonprofit all-volunteer organization was formed. Chapters began spreading to other parts of the world, and the program was first introduced to the United States in 1975. The idea is to provide the blind and mobility-impaired a chance to experience the freedom and benefits of physical activity through cross-country skiing.

At the beginning of the event, each skiier is paired with an instructor/guide, according to experience level. Beginners are taught basic fundamentals of the sport, while more advanced skiiers work on improving their techniques and endurance.

Skiiers navigate the slopes in pre-set tracks or grooves in the snow, while their instructors ski on a parallel set of tracks. The guide advises when to change direction, speed up and slow down, and describes any changes in the level and direction of the tracks. Skiiers with mobility impairments use sit-skis, while their guides give instructional tips and offer physical assistance if needed. In addition to cross-country skiing, mobility-impaired participants also have the chance to learn the sport of sled-hockey during the week.

The sighted instructors are volunteers from all over the United States who pay their own way to attend, just like the other participants. Duane Farrar, a blind skiier and chairman of Ski for Light’s Public Relations Committee, says their role is vital to the success of the program.

“They are there because they love cross-country skiing and wish to share that love with someone like myself who otherwise might not have the opportunity to experience the sport and the exhilarating sense of freedom that it brings,” Farrar explains.

The highlight of the event is a 5-K rally and 10-K race, complete with national anthems and Olympic-style finish line. Skiiers get the chance to showcase the skills they’ve learned during the week over a measured distance, but don’t have to be competitive or athletic. The only thing asked of them is to give skiing a try, and have fun.

Mary Kozy, a blind clinical social worker from Chicago, was a bit apprehensive when she attended her first Ski for Light in 1978. But it didn’t take her long to discover the joy of learning to ski, and meeting other people with positive attitudes.

After attending Ski for Light, I caught the “if I can do this, I can do anything” attitude, and went on to love skiing,” Kozy recalls. “It is a real high to go to SFL for a week and be around so many enthusiastic people.”

While skiing is the big attraction, it is only part of the total experience. After a day on the slopes, skiiers and guides return to their hotel for dinner, talent shows, music and dancing, or just lounging in a heated pool or hot-tub. Even poor snow conditions can’t stop the event. In cases of extremely low temperatures or not enough snow, participants organize games, field trips, exercises, and other activities.

Many skiiers believe the most rewarding aspect of Ski for Light is the memories and camaraderie they share with each other and their guides.

“The friendships I’ve made through SFL are deep, and those I will have all my life,” Mary Kozy says. “People come through town and visit, and we are now like a big family.”

Deborah Kendrick, a freelance writer and devoted participant, agrees. “I believe there is no other environment in which participants suspend, so completely, the sense of who is and who is not a person with a disability,” she says. “People of all walks of life come together for that one week to share a love of skiing, the outdoors, learning, and loving life.”

Paralegal College – Choosing the Right School

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

What’s the old saying, “the only thing that’s constant is change” but in the world of the paralegal there is one small caveat to that old adage when it comes to certification. Like most professions, changes in technology, rules and regulations have dictated rather dramatic changes in how an individual is trained and that holds true for paralegals. However, the requirement to become certified has remained unchanged; which means there is no certification requirement. Of course, a good percentage of fresh faced paralegal school trained graduates do take one of the many certification tests available shortly after graduation but the fact remains it’s still not required.

Crucial benchmarks to gauge when examining the standard of a paralegal college program:

1. Paralegal degree courses must teach hands-on applicable job skills in addition to bottom-line legal theory. The curriculum should also emphasize legal writing, torts, legal contracts and research and legal ethics. Paralegal schools should advance a students’ discriminating thinking capacity along with communication, organizational skills and an aptitude to correctly handle ethical issues. An opportunity to gain real-world experience before graduation through internships or clinical experience is also important.

2. Who’s behind the paralegal curriculum? In other words, what kind of credentials does the program director and the faculty possess. The director should have some type of paralegal education, a law degree or related advanced degree and if they also have legal field experience that’s a plus. In addition, faculty should either have direct paralegal field experience or at a minimum, experience working with paralegals. Of course, they must be an expert in the subject they are teaching.

3. Distance learning, also called online learning is becoming all the rage but is getting your paralegal degree or paralegal certificate from an online paralegal school right for you? Online learning is clearly different than traditional campus based learning but regardless of how the information is delivered (i.e. interactive video, tele-courses, etc.) the student / teacher interaction isn’t the same. Plus, online learning takes more self-discipline and motivation than campus learning and you have to make the determination that you have what it takes to complete the assignments.

If you want a career, not just a job and you have the internal strength and drive to push yourself the paralegal field is ripe for the picking. A paralegal offers status, fair wages and a growing job market for those will the talent and skills to match up with the endless opportunities.

Potato Harvest Season Increases Risks of Accidents

Monday, October 12th, 2009

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned farmers and contractors engaged in potato harvesting to be more careful with respect to the handling of farming equipment.

The HSE’s warning comes in the wake of the death of a 34-year-old worker in Fife, who was killed while handling a powered up potato harvester.

The HSE is also dealing with two other cases of accidents, the first one in Lincolnshire, where a worker received serious injuries from a chopping machine, and another in Cambridgeshire, where a farmer got his arm crushed under a cleaning roller.

Tony Mitchell from the HSE agriculture and food sector pointed out that the last seven years has witnessed as many as three deaths and numerous serious injuries to potato harvesting workers. He added that proper mechanisms and procedures have to be used to clean machinery, fix them or unclog any blockages, and that the machines must be turned off while carrying out any such procedure.

While admitting that the farmers engaged in commercial harvest work under immense pressure to deliver the harvest in time and that unstable weather conditions made their jobs even more difficult, Mitchell said that this should not be a reason to risk their lives and health. He said that taking unnecessary risks could lead to lifelong disability or even death. He added that accidents not only affect the workers but also their families, and cut off their means of sustenance.

According to government statistics, there have been 82 fatal injuries in the period between July and October in last five years. It is also worth noticing that the deaths during the harvest time accounts for around 50 percent of the deaths in the agricultural sector since 2004-05.

The HSE has now come up with a campaign for the farmers, which aims at making them think on the issue of their safety. This drive has been named as ‘Make the promise. Come home safe’. The campaign already has over 15,000 signatories and it is expected to attract more members soon.

Employers have a duty towards ensuring health and safety of the workers; an NEBOSH course can be of benefit to organisations in providing the knowledge to manage safely and effectively in compliance with both the organisation’s policy and best practice in health and safety and it can also be tailored to meet the needs of any particular organisation – click on NEBOSH Distance Learning for a unique web-based training programme from Workplace Law leading to the award of the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.

Legal Assistant – Bring on the Sun

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Anyone with even a faint familiarity with the law understands that for a lawyer to practice law they must pass the bar exam. On the other hand, few realize that another key player in most law offices today; the legal assistant, is not required to pass any type of post graduation test to enter the field. That’s right, after nearly a half century of existence the legal assistant position is still an unlicensed profession. Certainly, the importance of becoming certified has increased and gained stature but the fact remains that becoming certified is still voluntary.

Crucial benchmarks to gauge when examining the standard of a legal assistant program:

1. Legal assistant courses should teach usable job skills along with the underlying legal theory. The legal assistant schools curriculum should also cover torts, contracts, legal writing and legal research, ethics and litigation. Legal assistant courses should be geared towards developing students’ communication skills, their critical thinking and their skill set in dealing with ethical issues. Legal assistant degree programs should also include a way to gain experience such as an internship, clinical experience or practicum.

2. Who are the participants running the show? In other words, who were the people that put together the legal assistant schools curriculum and who are teachers? Does the teaching staff and legal assistant program director have outstanding educational credentials and the field experience to bring their book knowledge to life? Minimally, the program director should have a law degree or other type of advanced degree and the faculty must have real-world experience working with legal assistants but preferably as a legal assistant and they must be an “expert” in the subject matter they are teaching.

3. Are you looking for a traditional campus environment or online training? Online legal assistant training is becoming increasingly popular but is an online learning environment right for you? In addition, you need to find out what type of training system will be used (i.e. interactive video or web-based, etc.) and how much interaction takes place between the teachers and you (the student). Additionally, if you’ve never taken online classes before, you need to decide if you have the motivation and discipline to do the assignments on your own.

As the old saying goes, “if you want more than just a job and you have what it takes” then in today’s uncertain economy a career in law as a legal assistant, is about as good as opportunities get. Undoubtedly, opportunity knocks for those that have the required drive and training. So if you’ve been sitting on the fence; the time is now, jump down and go get your legal assistant degree.
