Don’t Put Background Music on Your Site if You Want to Keep Your Visitors Happy
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Don’t put background music on your site. If you would like a pro internet site which has serious traffic and keeps visitors, it is a good rule of thumb to stay with. There are always rare exceptions ( which I will list later ), but for the most part, you must take this little tid-bit of knowledge to heart. Here are the explanations why : one. Creditability – There are certain hallmarks that beginner internet site builders can not help but fall for. Background music on an internet site is one of them.
Unless your selling music or music services, having background music play on your site makes it appear amateur.
This lowers your sites credibility, and therefore you lose retentions of your visitors. People aren’t visiting your site to hear music… They’re potentially there to find info. Think about it…
Does Google, Yahoo, Newsweek, Run , or Amazon play music on their websites? Do any ‘professional’ or ‘creditable’ websites you know of play music? Now cast your mind back to all the site that you know of that DO play background music… How worthy did they look? Did a lot of them look like a first grader designed them? Did it look like a MySpace website? How worthy are MySpace websites? Would you trust content on web sites like these? Hmmmm. Two.
Bandwidth – Streaming a full version of a song ( 4-5 mins ) as a background music for your internet site takes up too many resources. That having been said, if your internet site is super slow to load and ‘choppy’ to visitors with slower connections, I am able to just about assure you will not have lots of returning visitors. Not to mention the proven fact that each time you refresh or load a new page, the tune starts over – super irritating. Three. Repeating Music – Many folk will play smaller segment of background music that loop in order to reduce load times to their websites. If anybody comes to your internet site and spends any quantity of respectable time there, it will not take long before they are going insane listening to a 15-20 2nd long song segment loop one thousand times. If you ‘play that cool music’… Your going to have visitors leaving your internet site in hordes. Four. Taste In Music – Everybody has different tastes in music. What songs you like, others may hate. I know, I know, it’s difficult to credit not everybody loves Barry Manalo as much as you do, but the very last thing you would like to do is drive folks away before they even look at your content. Five. Music Already Playing – Now days, folks spend a large amount of time on their PCs. Due to this, they regularly have music playing from Cd’s, MP3s, Web radio, and so on. On their PC to help use the time. How upsetting is it when you visit a domain and it starts playing music that mixes in with your music? Nothing fun about making an attempt to hear 2 tracks at the same time. The quick solution will be to leave your site.
